Silchester Roman Town Tours

The rich history of Calleva Atrebatum

Explore the site of an extensive Roman town

Calleva Atrebatum, Roman Silchester, thrived nearly 2,000 years ago.  It was at the junction of significant Roman roads, but after the Romans left the location was abandoned..

Much remains hidden today, but the site is clearly marked on the ground and we can walk around some of the walls and imagine the atmosphere in the amphitheatre.

If we are lucky, during the summer, we can watch archaeologists as they dig for clues, and talk to some of them about past and present finds.

Take a step into history

Get to know the incredible history of Calleva Atrebatum.  Two starting points are Silchester village or the Roman town car park.

A 75 minute walk from either those will allow us to see some of the remains of the wall and imagine the changes in the area in the last 2,000 years.

A two hour walk from either starting point takes in a complete circuit of the walls and a visit to the Roman amphitheatre.

Or a full day walk starting at Mortimer station is an eight mile countryside walk to the Roman remains and back.  This could incorporate lunch at a local pub.
