Featured Walking Tour: Silchester

This post first appeared in 2014.

Here’s a typical eight mile walk to Silchester, the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, once one of the largest towns in Roman Britain.

We would meet at Reading or Basingstoke and, after a short train ride to Mortimer, we would make our way along field paths and country lanes through the remote Hampshire countryside.

We will discover the remains of the Roman town, walk around some of the walls and imagine the atmosphere in the amphitheatre.  If we are lucky, during the summer, we can watch archaeologists as they dig for clues, and talk to some of them about past and present finds.
